NBA Betting Guide: When to Fade Hot Streaks

The Knicks have rattled off a streak of nine consecutive straight-up wins and nine covers in a row. Perhaps more impressively, New York was slated as underdogs in five games during this run. Being the contrarians that we inescapably are, we are fading the Big Apple's NBA representatives as hosts to the Charlotte Hornets in Tuesday, March 7, 2023 NBA action.

Justifying our counterintuitive position, we cite the following angle, which has delivered a statistically significant 22% return on investment since the 2005-06 season, with only five losing seasons over this horizon.

Rationalizing this system's long-term profitability, we hypothesize that expectations become overly inflated for teams with hot hands, as casual bettors clamor to support squads in this position. However, a relative lack of familiarity with competition outside their division renders covers less likely, particularly true, we suppose, for teams that missed the playoffs versus opposition that boasts recent postseason experience (we regard berths in the last playoffs as a general proxy for team quality).

BTW, the 20-46 Hornets have dropped three in a row SU/ATS. But would-be adherents to this system should not fret, as this setup is 31-15-1 ATS when the road team is on a losing streak.

Happy betting!!
